The one of the space brand.

Hello Everybody,

During this week, thanks to rarefaction and chemical non-equilibrium i have been thinking a lot about the space program, men efforts in space exploration and... how much and how little we have managed in 50 years.

Let me put it on perspective.

First human manned flight 1903
First flight across the Atlantic 1927
First supersonic flight  1947
First man on space 1961
First man on the moon 1969
First space station 1971 (Salyut 1)

Amazing!! Right!!! Following this pattern, anybody would have thought that By 1990 or the year 2000 top we will be living on mars.
But...
Since 1971 till today we have not made any real progress in Manned Space Exploration.
Yes. We had the shuttle and we have ISS but those are Low earth orbit players. Since the ending of the Apollo missions on  1972 we have not gone farther.

Now the good news!!!

It seems that space science and space exploration are having a second chance. This time boosted by private companies. SpaceX, Virgin Galactic, Space Adventures, among others are giving us back the dream of reaching other worlds. (Special  applause for SpaceX, http://bit.ly/vtIogA).

I'm sure that the rocket scientists, the geeks, star wars/star trek fans and every kid in the world are really excited about this, but sadly there is a majority of people that thinks that its not worth it.

I have been fighting this topic for many years, specially because every time I tell people that I want to be an astronaut or they see me "too excited" about space they will ask me why is so important, and the classical question, "Why not use that money to feed the people of Africa or cure AIDS?"

Well.. First of all, Thanks to all of this people out there, because you all gave me an idea.  This idea is explained in a letter I wrote on Yuri's night of this year. Sadly nobody wanted to publish it and the idea finish on my blog and hard drive.  Lets see how it goes this time.

Ladies and gentlemen, my letter:

April 12, 2011...

Today is the 50th anniversary of the first manned spaceflight. Sadly not so many people know about it or give the credit it deserves. I would recognize that Google is helping with its nice doodle, but apart from the casual comment in the news, the majority of the people in the world will pass through this celebration without taking notice.

I have to admit that I am a space exploration fan. Since I was 12 years old because of my first trip to the Kennedy Space center, I felt in love with the idea of men conquering the space as an interplanetary specie. This passion kept growing thanks to movies, books and TV series such as ʻStar Warsʼ, ʻA pale blue dotʼ, ʻStar Trekʼ, among others. From my point of view, everything that is related to space colonization, has been an obvious step in the human race evolution. But as strange as it may look to all the space lovers out there, if you ask the average Joe about the last mission of the Space Shuttle he most certainly would have no idea. Even more, he would regard all of these efforts as a waste of time and resources, not realizing at all, that a lot of the improvements in his life had been brought by a vast number of space programs.
Every time I am talking about how important is to focus on the human race future in the space, the first argument people use against it, is that we are spending too much money in robots and spaceships, while down here, there is people dying of hunger. Then it is my job to explain them how space exploration has improved our life. Medical equipment, food industry, clothing industry, farming techniques and hundreds examples more are direct descendants of space science.
One example I found particularly interesting, is how the design of a spacecraft for interplanetary exploration can help us with solving one of the biggest problems about earth resources. Seen from a general perspective, the earth and a spaceship are the same, both floating in the huge emptiness of space in a closed environment. If we manage to create a spacecraft that maintains the balance with a high efficiency recycle system, a closed loop, we can use those learnings to have a greener life here.
Antoine de Saint-Exupery once write “If you want to build a ship, don't drum up people together to collect wood and don't assign them tasks and work, but rather teach them to long for the endless immensity of the sea”.
NASA, ESA and many other space agencies and companies had done wonders with their Technology Transfer Program, but there is barely any acknowledgment from the society. From my point of view, they have to show to the people, that something as common as their baby nutritional food can be traced back to the space sector. My idea is relatively simple We have to show the people the importance and usage of space exploration. How? By creating a logo that will be in every product that owns its development to the aerospace sector.
Every time a space agency or space company signs a contract for a technology transfers project, there should be a clause that demands that the final product or part of the package, must have a logo which would proudly informs that its development is owned to space technology. Pushing this idea a little further, there could be a note explaining interesting facts about the space and the space exploration brand initiative.
Maybe this idea seems to be a little bit to simple to diverge the current trend in peoples thinking, but itʼs a fact we people relate logos with ideas, if you have any doubt ask McDonalds® or The Coca Cola Company®.

But with the help of the logotype, as shown in the diagram B, a cycle becomes completed. Once people realize that babyʼs food, dadʼs prosthetic arm, the carʼs aerodynamics, the hospitalʼs machines and many other products are the result of the research for space exploration, the whole idea of going to the Moon, Mars and beyond, despite of the risks, would be supported by a vast majority.

I am confident that the secrets and answers to many of this world’s questions and problems lay away of the earth. I am also aware that it is a dangerous and scary adventure. But before we force people to follow unknown paths, we have to remind them how much we have achieved, how much more we can win. Once they they realize the importance of it, they will be ready to understand that choosing short-term safety for the human race by denying humanity's access to the stars, will eventually lead to a future when we will die out, leaving an empty Earth and nothing else. Choosing safety and mediocrity the stars are out of reach.
That is why, my wish for this 50th anniversary is that before the celebration of the centennial of the first human spaceflight we will be able to reach another planet.

Me Teacher

The one explaining Why we need music...

There is a music store called Tower Records, they have a slogan that has became part of my life, it says, "No music, no life". Maybe for some it will be a little to extreme.
But for me there is magic in the music, being raised by a melomaniac its hard for me to not be in love with the music. My dad used to say that when I was a baby he put me next to his couch in our living room, turn on the stereo and listen to classical music next to me while he was reading something about medicine.
Ever since, I have been aware of the music in the universe. For me there is no family dinner if we don't put music as a background. It has became a must.
Everybody will thing that me loving the music will make me an amateur player, or even a semi pro. But... Being honest I am the worst one there. I cant follow the rhythm or play an instrument or even sing. Belive me I have try and I have failed but this only makes me appreciate music even more.
I listen to this magic in the air and the answer of why we need music is clear, we need music because it is food for our soul.
And now, There are songs for everything so I will leave you with some of my favorites...

That amazing song for waking up.

The one of the Dragon Boat Festival

Dragon Boat

Hello Everybody!!!

On last weeks monday I was glad to take part on the Dragon Boat Festival, This is an interesting Festival that takes place in Taiwan, China and many other Asian countries and actually dont have a real explanation because there are many legends about how it started but its a tradition that has more than 1000 years and its really funny.

Here is one of the many legends.

The Dragon Boat Festival traditionally falls on the fifth day of the fifth month in the Chinese Lunar Calendar.

The Races are held to commemorate the death of Qu Yuan, the legendary Chinese poet and patriot who lived during the Chou Dynasty almost 2000 years ago. He held a high position in the court of one of the major states of the time, but was eventually exiled by corrupt government officials. Qu Yuen wrote many poems expressing his great love for his country and his people, lamenting his own fate.

As a final protest against the government, Qu Yuen cast himself into the Mi Lo River.

The local fishermen were so moved by his gesture that they raced in their boat to try and recover his body, beating the water with paddles to prevent the fish from devouring him. They also threw rive dumplings into-the water to succour his spirit. To prevent the sea serpents from eating the rice offerings, the dumplings were wrapped in silk bound with five threads in the colours of the emperor.

As this tradition developed boats took the form of dragons to appease the controller of the waters, and ensure a safe and swift journey.

As you can see, they are really interesting. I had an amazing time enjoying the adventure of paddling a boat with a Dragon face in it. If you want to know more, you can send me an email or check wikipedia =) (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dragon_boat)

I leave you with a few pictures... I hope you enjoy.

The one with the return to the Blog...

好久不見!!
Or what is the same in Chinese, Long time no see!!
I know that I have not posted in a long long time. But here I am and with a strong compromise of posting every week at least once. Today will be about me going to study my M.S!!!!
On Friday May 27th I was officcialy accepted to NCKU!!

NewImage
NCKU?... What is that??

Well, here is a little info about NCKU....
National Cheng Kung University (traditional Chinese: 國立成功大學; simplified Chinese: 国立成功大学), also Koxinga University, is a national university in Tainan City, Taiwan. Its abbreviation is NCKU. In Chinese, it is shortened to 成大 (Chéng Dà). Cheng Kung is named after Koxinga (Cheng Ch'eng-kung), who defeated the Dutch and founded the Kingdom of Tungning in Taiwan.NCKU is one of the most prestigious universities in Taiwan, with high reputations in science, engineering, medicine, management, planning & design. According to Times Higher Education- QS World University Rankings and Performance Ranking of Scientific Papers for World Universities, NCKU was ranked second or third among all universities in Taiwan. Many surveys throughout the years also show that its students are most desired by Taiwanese companies. NCKU has 9 colleges, 40 departments, 82 graduate institutes, and 54 research centers, and is also a major university, education and area network center in Taiwan. In specific fields, NCKU ranked globally the 41st in the field of Engineering and the 216th in the field of Natural Science.
Here is a link to a map of NCKU (http://news-en.secr.ncku.edu.tw/ezfiles/54/1054/img/56/campus_eng.jpg)
And about the Master??
I will start my M.S. in Aerospace Engineering next September, and I couldnt be more excited. So in the moment when I got notiffy about my admission, I contact the professors and search for a Research group. There where many amazing projects, but the most amazing one was
"Pilot Research of Hypersonic Speed Vehicle (2/3)"
The project explanation goes like this...

Supersonic Combustion Ramjet (SCRamjet) engine is the next generation propulsion system and its design encompasses the key technologies of the efficient supersonic combustion and the integrated hypersonic airframe. To elevate the capacity of domestic defence technologies, a collaboration research program on SCRamjet engines between National Cheng Kung University and Chung-shan Institute of Science and Technology, Taiwan, R.O.C., was set up. Chung-shan Institute of Science and Technology is well-experienced in the development of Ramjet engines and is engaging heavily in the development of SCRamjet engines now. The aims of the joint program are to build up the fundamental design tools and capacities of the domestic hypersonic vehicles. The entire program is scheduled over a span of 9 years with 3 phases. In the first phase (3 years), the ground test facilities for generating hypersonic flow fields and supersonic combustion, optical diagnostic technologies, and CFD tools with real gas effects and turbulence modeling of supersonic combustion flows will be developed. In this phase, hydrogen-fueled technologies will be focused. In the second phase (3 years), the project will be extended to the hydrocarbon-fueled technologies, based on the tools developed in the first phase. In the third phase (3 years), the designs of the SCRamjet engine and the hypersonic vehicle will be optimized, according to the data collected in the first two phases. The optimized models will also be validated in the ground test facilities. This proposed project—“Pilot Research of Hypersonic Vehicle (2/3)” is the continuing project of the first year project in the first phase. Base on the first year efforts, the goals of the project are to (1) design and build up the hydrogen fuel injection system, conduct the flow visualization and pressure and heat flux measurements of the supersonic combustion flow fields, and complete the SCRamjet engine experiments and comparison with CFD simulations; (2) complete the two-dimensional OH-LIPF experiments to depict the temperature and OH concentration distributions in the supersonic combustion flow fields, with the adaption of the tunable KrF excimer laser and temperature calibration; (3) conduct the numerical parametric study of the supersonic combustor for its design; (4) investigate the hypersonic inlet and nozzle flows numerically to assist us in the detailed design of the integrated airframe. In the on-going first year project, a hypersonic shock tunnel which can generate flows with Mach number ranging from 2 to 6, the optical diagnostic technique—OH-LIPF florescence spectral analysis method calibrated in the hydrogen/air flame, and CFD algorithm including real gas effects and turbulence modeling of supersonic combustion flows are being implemented.

SCRAMJET

As you can see in the Picture above, in simply words, the project is about aircraft propulsion systems!
So... I went to talk with the Professor in charge of this project, Professor Wen Chih-Yung (溫志湧), he has an impressive CV and seems to have an amazing team. So after the meeting I ask him if he could accept me in his research team and he said yes!!!
So here is it. My return to the posts will be inform you all that starting as soon as possible  I will be designing Supersonic Engines!!
